Winnipeg’s Matt Dunstone remains undefeated at the 2025 Montana’s Canadian Curling Trials in Halifax, securing a 9-7 victory over St. John’s Brad Gushue during Monday’s evening session. Dunstone described the game as chaotic yet felt his team had control for most of it, despite not having the hammer initially. They managed to flip the hammer early on, breaking through in the seventh end. Gushue, known for his late-game prowess, applied significant pressure as the match progressed.
2014 Olympic champion Brad Jacobs and his Calgary team defeated Winnipeg’s Jordon McDonald 6-3, leaving McDonald without a win. Saskatoon’s Mike McEwen outplayed Calgary’s Kevin Koe 9-7, with both teams now holding a 2-2 record. Saskatoon’s Ryan Kleiter secured his first win at 1-3 by overcoming Toronto’s John Epping, who also sits at 1-3.
Gushue started the day strong with a 5-3 victory over Epping in the first draw, clinching a low-scoring match by stealing points in crucial ends. With hopes of representing Canada at the Winter Games once more, Gushue, the 2006 Olympic champion, is determined to finish his competitive career on a high note after securing bronze in 2022.
Dunstone began the day with a 7-3 win over Kleiter, taking a commanding lead early on and maintaining it throughout the game. In other results from the early draws, Koe secured a close 8-7 win over McDonald with a three-point ninth end, while Jacobs defeated McEwen 6-3.
On the women’s side, Rachel Homan bounced back from a recent loss with a convincing 12-5 win against Selena Sturmay in the afternoon draw. Homan, the two-time reigning Canadian and world women’s champion, improved to 3-1, reclaiming her winning streak after losing in extra ends to Kayla Skrlik. Homan’s team dominated the match with a five-point third end, establishing an 8-2 lead.
Kerri Einarson from Gimli, Man., maintained her unbeaten streak at 4-0 with a 6-4 victory over Winnipeg’s Kaitlyn Lawes. Christina Black of Halifax defeated Corryn Brown of Kamloops, B.C., 9-4, while Skrlik secured a 7-6 win over Kate Cameron of St. Adolphe, Man. Lawes, Sturmay, Black, and Skrlik are currently tied at 2-2, with Brown at 1-3 and Cameron still seeking her first win at 0-4.
The winners of the men’s and women’s events at the curling trials will earn the opportunity to represent Canada at the 2026 Games in Milan and Cortina, Italy.
