“Teen Charged in Fatal Shooting of Belinda Sarkodie in Hamilton”

Featured in:

Hamilton police have apprehended and pressed charges against a teenager, marking four months since gunfire erupted near a downtown bus stop, resulting in the tragic death of Belinda Sarkodie, an innocent bystander. Chief Frank Bergen condemned the senseless act, emphasizing the loss of a young life due to reckless behavior.

The 17-year-old suspect surrendered on Tuesday, facing accusations of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder. Despite ongoing investigations, the motive behind the shooting remains unclear, with uncooperative individuals hindering progress, according to Det. Sgt. John Obrovac.

Authorities, constrained by the Youth Criminal Justice Act, are refrained from disclosing the identity or whereabouts of the teenager during the period when a warrant was issued for his arrest. The incident, occurring at a bustling city intersection on July 11, occurred in close proximity to a street festival, resulting in the tragic death of Sarkodie.

Sarkodie, a Ghanaian national who sought refuge in Canada in 2024 as part of the 2SLGBTQ+ community, was remembered fondly by her loved ones. Her partner, Grace Nasiru, expressed relief at the suspect’s surrender but questioned the delay and potential accomplices aiding his evasion.

Obrovac commended the collective efforts that led to the suspect’s surrender, highlighting the relentless pursuit to bring him to justice. He emphasized the commitment of law enforcement to address such incidents effectively.

The devastating loss of innocent lives, like Sarkodie and international student Harsimrat Randhawa, who fell victim to stray gunfire earlier this year, underscores the urgent need for community vigilance and cooperation in combating youth violence. Chief Bergen urged families to intervene and deter young individuals from engaging in criminal activities, emphasizing the responsibility of society to address such unacceptable behaviors.
