“US Military Destroys Drug Smuggling Vessels in Pacific”

Featured in:

The U.S. military announced on Sunday that it destroyed two vessels linked to drug smuggling in the eastern Pacific Ocean, resulting in the deaths of five individuals and one survivor. This action is part of the Trump administration’s efforts to combat alleged drug traffickers in Latin America and to prepare for a naval blockade of Iranian ports.

These recent attacks on Saturday bring the total number of casualties from boat strikes by the U.S. military to at least 168 since the administration began targeting individuals labeled as “narcoterrorists” in early September. The U.S. Southern Command, responsible for the strikes in the eastern Pacific and Caribbean Sea, stated that the targeted vessels were along known smuggling routes, although no evidence was provided that drugs were being transported. Videos shared online depicted the vessels being engulfed in explosions after being targeted.

The U.S. Southern Command indicated that they had alerted the U.S. Coast Guard to initiate a search-and-rescue operation for the survivor. The Coast Guard confirmed their involvement in coordinating the search efforts and promised updates as the operation progressed.

President Donald Trump has declared that the U.S. is in an “armed conflict” with cartels in Latin America, justifying these actions as necessary to combat the drug flow into the U.S. and reduce fatal overdoses. However, the administration has faced criticism for the lack of evidence supporting their claims of targeting “narcoterrorists.”

Critics have raised concerns about the legality and effectiveness of these boat strikes, particularly as many fatal overdoses in the U.S. are linked to fentanyl trafficked over land from Mexico. Despite ongoing military operations in the Middle East, the boat strikes in Latin America have persisted.

In response to failed ceasefire discussions with Iran, Trump announced plans for a U.S. navy blockade of ships entering or exiting the Strait of Hormuz. This strategic move aims to undermine Iran’s position in the conflict by pressuring the reopening of the critical waterway through which a significant portion of global oil flows. The blockade is expected to target Iranian ports, according to U.S. Central Command.
