Prime Minister Mark Carney warmly received Canadian tennis sensation Victoria Mboko at Parliament Hill, commending the Toronto teenager for her impressive performance on the WTA Tour this season. Carney met with 19-year-old Mboko and her family at his West Block office, where he admired the trophy she earned at the National Bank Open in Montreal earlier this year.
Expressing pride on behalf of all Canadians, Carney praised Mboko’s achievements at such a young age, emphasizing the significance of her success. He described the National Bank Open trophy as a symbol of determination, strength, and exceptional talent.
During the meeting, Mboko signed the tennis racket she used to clinch the championship in Montreal, prompting Carney’s surprised reaction and assurance that the racket would be prominently displayed. Jokingly, Mboko offered Carney to play with the racket, to which he responded with a laugh, admitting his tennis skills were not on par.
Starting the season ranked 350th globally, Mboko soared to a career-best 18th position after securing victories in two tournaments, including the prestigious WTA 1000-level National Bank Open.
