Darcy and Laura Clarke, the owners of Bentley’s Burgers and Fries in West Chezzetcook, Nova Scotia, were pleasantly surprised this week to receive a handwritten letter and $40 in American currency from a stranger in Alabama. The money was to cover an unclaimed order placed at their restaurant.
The sender, who mistakenly ordered from the wrong Bentley’s location, expressed deep apologies for the mix-up. Darcy, recounting the incident, mentioned that he took the order over the phone and assumed it was a typical tourist request. However, after the order went unclaimed for over an hour, they gave it to another customer.
The letter, postmarked from Alabama and dated the day after the order, explained the error and enclosed $40 to cover the cost of the uneaten meal. Laura mentioned that the amount not only covered the order but also allowed them to plan a giveaway at their ice cream shop during the summer.
The couple shared the heartwarming story on their restaurant’s Facebook page, where it received significant attention and positive feedback. Despite the ongoing trade tensions, the Clarkes emphasized the importance of fostering positive connections with their American neighbors through gestures like these.
In appreciation of the stranger’s kind act, Darcy and Laura plan to send a Christmas package back to the return address, filled with positive comments from social media, restaurant merchandise, and seasonings. They aim to highlight the generosity and goodwill that transcends borders, especially during challenging times.
