A mother in Saskatoon aims to support children battling cancer by sharing the story of her late daughter who succumbed to a severe form of leukemia earlier this year.
Cass Thiesen’s daughter, Clarke, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) at the tender age of two. Over the subsequent four years, Clarke underwent numerous treatments such as radiation, chemotherapy, and bone marrow transplants in a courageous battle against the disease.
Despite her illness, Clarke maintained a positive attitude throughout her time at the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital, even requesting birthday gifts for her younger sibling rather than herself. Thiesen fondly recalls Clarke’s infectious spirit and sense of humor, bringing joy to those around her with her playful antics.
Tragically, Clarke passed away at the age of six in April. In honor of her memory, the family established the Forever Clarke Foundation to aid families in Saskatchewan grappling with cancer.
Recognizing the impact of Clarke’s story, family friend Tracy Kondratiuk was inspired to turn it into a children’s book, “Clarke’s Big, Brave Heart.” The book aims to celebrate Clarke’s unique personality, offer encouragement to children battling cancer, and facilitate discussions about the illness within families.
Thiesen emphasizes that the book serves as a tool for children and parents to navigate challenging health circumstances and appreciate the precious gift of life. Proceeds from the book sales will go towards supporting the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital and assisting cancer-affected families in Saskatchewan through the Forever Clarke Foundation.
