Sea otters residing along the South coast of British Columbia and Vancouver Island have been found to have elevated levels of persistent toxic chemicals in their bodies, according to a recent study. These chemicals, commonly found in various consumer products like food packaging, cosmetics, and electronics, were detected in samples from 11 deceased sea otters collected between 2016 and 2021.
Conducted by Dana Price, a master’s candidate at the University of British Columbia, the study was published in the journal Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry this week. Price highlighted that this study serves as a benchmark for future comparisons, as it is the first of its kind in the region.
These chemicals, known as polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAs), are often referred to as “forever chemicals” because they do not easily degrade in the environment. They are associated with health risks such as organ damage, cancer, and compromised immune systems. While none of the sea otters examined in the study were believed to have died from PFAs, their presence in all samples raises concerns about the long-term health of marine ecosystems.
Comparatively, the levels of PFAs in British Columbia sea otters are lower than those found in their American counterparts. Price speculates that this difference may be attributed to Canadian regulations and the relatively lower human populations in the areas where the otters inhabit.
Sea otters, unlike many other marine mammals, tend to stay in one location throughout their lives, making it easier to analyze how local factors can impact their overall well-being. This study contributes to a growing body of research on the dangers posed by PFAs in the environment.
Health Canada has set limits on acceptable levels of these chemicals in drinking water, emphasizing the potential harmful effects on various bodily systems. The study underscores the importance of continued research to inform regulatory decisions concerning PFAs and their impact on marine ecosystems.
Despite efforts by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans to regulate PFAs, the sheer number of these chemicals on the market poses challenges in monitoring and controlling their presence in the environment. Researchers emphasize the need for ongoing vigilance and regulation to address the persistent threat posed by these harmful substances.
