“Replica Columbus Statue Installed Near White House”

Featured in:

A replica statue of Christopher Columbus has been installed on the grounds of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building near the White House as part of the Trump administration’s efforts to honor the explorer. This move comes after a previous statue was thrown into Baltimore’s harbor in 2020 during protests against racism.

President Trump supports the traditional portrayal of Columbus as a key figure in the 1492 expedition that marked the start of European colonization in the Americas. However, Columbus is also viewed in modern times as a symbol of Western Europe’s conquest of the New World and its native populations.

The White House expressed its commitment to honoring Columbus for future generations, emphasizing his heroism. The statue, made predominantly of marble, was crafted by sculptor Will Hemsley from Centreville, Maryland. The Italian American Organizations United, which owns the statue, agreed to lend it to the federal government for display near the White House.

The original statue was toppled by protesters on July 4, 2020, in response to the death of George Floyd, with demonstrators accusing Columbus of atrocities against indigenous peoples. The vandalism of Columbus statues was part of a broader movement questioning the explorer’s legacy.

In recent times, there has been a shift in some circles to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day, a change that President Biden marked with a proclamation in 2021. President Trump has condemned this shift, labeling it as a distortion of history by the political left.

Trump has vowed to restore Columbus Day’s significance, criticizing Democrats for tarnishing Columbus’s reputation and the sentiments of Italian Americans who hold him in high regard.
