Alberta Premier Danielle Smith expressed concerns over Canada recently losing its measles elimination status and acknowledged the challenges in controlling the highly contagious disease due to unrestricted travel across provinces and internationally.
Smith emphasized the importance of vigilance in preventing the spread of measles and highlighted the government’s transparency in reporting outbreaks and cases on their website for public awareness and prompt action.
Alberta and Ontario have recorded the highest number of measles cases in Canada this year, with Alberta reporting nearly 2,000 cases since March. The province witnessed its first measles-related death when an infant passed away shortly after birth due to the mother contracting the virus during pregnancy.
The Pan American Health Organization announced the revocation of Canada’s measles elimination status after a prolonged circulation of the same strain for over a year. To regain the status, Canada must achieve no transmission of the same strain for a minimum of one year.
Smith credited Alberta’s vaccine campaign for efforts to contain the outbreak, particularly in communities with lower vaccination rates like Mennonite and Hutterite communities. The province targeted these areas with vaccination campaigns, resulting in significant uptake increases.
When asked about Alberta’s role in helping Canada regain its measles elimination status, Smith reiterated the importance of vaccination awareness, emphasizing the severe impact measles can have on young children.
Opposition NDP health critic Sarah Hoffman criticized the delay in appointing a permanent chief medical officer of health in Alberta, highlighting the importance of public communication and information dissemination. Hoffman also raised concerns about the need for increased awareness of tuberculosis, following a recent outbreak declaration in Edmonton.
Hoffman emphasized the government’s responsibility in providing essential health information and removing barriers for individuals seeking immunizations against diseases like tuberculosis, measles, and COVID-19.
