Balsam fir trees in New Brunswick are showing signs of distress, with many turning red and dying following last summer’s unprecedented drought. Concerns have been raised about the future of this iconic provincial tree. Professor Anthony Taylor, a forestry researcher at the University of New Brunswick, has witnessed first-hand the detrimental effects of the dry conditions on these evergreen trees, which are commonly used as Christmas trees.
According to Taylor, the warm and dry weather experienced during the drought negatively impacts the growth of balsam fir trees. This pattern of die-offs is consistent with observations made after previous hot and dry summers in 1986 and 2018. The lack of water causes the trees to halt photosynthesis prematurely, hindering their ability to grow and produce necessary energy stores for essential processes and defense mechanisms.
Due to their shallow root systems, balsam fir trees struggle to access water during prolonged dry spells, exacerbating the stress caused by the drought. Peter McKeil, a woodlot owner in Burtt’s Corner, has already lost around 100 trees on his property due to the ongoing die-off. He has adjusted his harvesting practices to salvage remaining trees before they succumb to the same fate.
McKeil believes that with the worsening effects of climate change, the future of balsam fir trees in southern New Brunswick looks bleak. He emphasizes the need for adaptation or potentially facing extinction as a species in the region. Taylor echoes these concerns, emphasizing the urgent need for climate action to mitigate further damage to the provincial tree population.
