“Lost Tortoise Molly’s Prairie Odyssey Baffles Experts”

Featured in:

A large African spurred tortoise named Molly was discovered wandering slowly near a wetland in the Canadian prairie, leaving experts puzzled about her presence at Oak Hammock Marsh in Manitoba’s Interlake. Gillian Malchuk, a nature interpreter at Oak Hammock, expressed surprise at the sight of Molly, as her species is native to the Sahara desert and not typically found in the area.

Malchuk and her colleagues rescued Molly, who weighed 36 kilograms, after receiving reports of tortoise sightings in the region. Initially assuming the sightings were of a common snapping turtle, native to Manitoba, they were taken aback when an observation on the iNaturalist app confirmed the presence of the unusual tortoise.

Upon being alerted to a tortoise in the parking lot, Malchuk and a coworker ventured into the reeds to locate Molly. To their amazement, they found the massive tortoise, which stood out prominently in the area. The Oak Hammock staff cared for Molly, feeding her cucumbers and flower petals, until her owners were located through a social media post.

Molly was reunited with her family, who had owned her for 15 years and raised her since she was a baby. It was discovered that Molly had escaped through a gap in their backyard fence during renovations. Despite her escape, the mystery remained as to how Molly traveled approximately 20 kilometers to reach the marsh.

Speculation at Oak Hammock suggests that a well-intentioned individual may have relocated Molly to the wetland, unaware that tortoises are not native to the area. The staff marveled at Molly’s journey and pondered whether she had traversed the distance on her own. Malchuk emphasized the tortoise’s resilience, dubbing her a “nature’s little Houdini” for her escape attempts during her brief stay at Oak Hammock.

In the end, the curious case of Molly the tortoise remains a fascinating tale of an unexpected visitor’s adventure far from home.
