A vehicle veered off the roadway and crashed into the front entrance of a Home Hardware store in Saskatoon early Friday morning. The incident occurred at approximately 1:30 a.m. CST along Central Avenue in the Sutherland neighborhood.
Upon arrival, the Saskatoon Fire Department found the car inside the store, occupying the previous location of the front cash registers. Firefighters inspected the scene, confirmed the car was not operational or leaking fluids, and no individuals were present inside the vehicle.
Although no one was discovered at the scene, security cameras captured three individuals fleeing the area following the crash. Saskatoon Police confirmed the suspects fled and stated that the hit-and-run unit is conducting an investigation.
Store proprietor Wyatt Zacharias received a notification from the police and arrived at the scene around 3:30 a.m. CST to find significant damage to the business entrance. Zacharias expressed gratitude that the incident occurred after business hours when the store was unoccupied, emphasizing the potential devastation if customers or employees had been present.
Zacharias noted from surveillance footage that both the driver and passenger appeared unharmed as they left the vehicle, a positive outcome despite the property damage. Despite the chaos, Zacharias’ construction team swiftly arrived and managed to reopen the store by 8 a.m.
The security video revealed behaviors suggesting the driver may have been under the influence, as they returned to the car to retrieve beer after exiting the building, leaving behind beer cans scattered throughout the store. Zacharias mentioned that temporary repairs have been implemented, with more extensive renovations estimated to take two months and cost between $30,000 and $40,000.
Community support has been swift, with neighboring businesses offering assistance and individuals providing encouragement and treats. Zacharias expressed gratitude for the immediate help and camaraderie shown by the community during this challenging time.
