The head of the International Paralympic Committee expressed disappointment over the grievances raised by Ukraine’s National Paralympic Committee during the Milan-Cortina Games, suggesting an effort to divert attention from sports to politics. Andrew Parsons, in an interview with The Associated Press on the last day of the Winter Paralympics, commended the competition’s outcome and addressed various topics including the reinstatement of the Russian flag and anthem, the impact of warmer weather, and the logistical challenges of hosting events across multiple venues.
Parsons criticized the attempts by the Ukrainian National Paralympic Committee and other national committees to shift the focus away from sports, describing it as “disappointing.” While acknowledging the difficult situation in Ukraine, he emphasized the importance of upholding rules even in the face of challenges faced by the Ukrainian committee.
He noted the expected political influences but regretted seeing sports bodies engaging in similar behavior. Parsons urged a shift back to sports, emphasizing the significance of maintaining a focus on athletic achievements rather than external political factors.
Responding to Ukraine’s stance, Valerii Sushkevych, the president of the Ukraine National Paralympic Committee, clarified that advocating for peace and denouncing war was a human rights issue, not a political statement. He highlighted concerns over the participation of Russian athletes under their own flag, prompting Ukraine and other nations to boycott certain ceremonies in protest.
Amidst accusations of systematic pressure on Ukrainian athletes and coaches, disagreements between parties emerged regarding the handling of certain incidents, including the alleged removal of a Ukrainian flag and restrictions on symbolic gestures during podium ceremonies. Despite the tensions, the IPC and local organizers defended their decisions.
Regarding the return of the Russian flag and anthem at the Paralympics after several years, Parsons underscored the importance of prioritizing sports over political agendas. He acknowledged dissenting opinions but emphasized that the majority of national Paralympic committees focused on the sporting aspect of the event, aligning with the IPC’s mission of promoting inclusivity through Para sport.
