Australia Warns of H5N1 Bird Flu Spread Near Adelaide

Featured in:

Australia issued a warning on Monday regarding the potential spread of H5N1 bird flu following a significant mortality event involving approximately 50 greater crested terns near Adelaide. Despite this incident, there have been no reports of the virus affecting Australia’s poultry farms, many of which have implemented strict measures since the initial detection in June.

Agriculture Minister Julie Collins confirmed the presence of H5N1 bird flu in a group of 49 deceased and 35 ailing terns discovered during aerial surveillance near Cape Jaffa, located 250 kilometers from Adelaide. Collins emphasized the likelihood of increased wildlife impact due to the virus spread, marking the first documented mass mortality event. She highlighted the inevitability of significant losses once H5N1 bird flu starts circulating among wildlife and the natural environment.

Collins disclosed that Australia has recorded a total of 74 confirmed cases, with occurrences reported across Western Australia and Queensland, predominantly concentrated in South Australia. Both Australia and New Zealand, which reported its initial H5N1 case recently, have undertaken extensive preparations to combat the virus, including enhanced biosecurity measures at farms, monitoring of shore birds, vaccination of vulnerable species, and preparation of response strategies.

In recent years, H5N1 bird flu has caused substantial losses, affecting hundreds of millions of birds and mammals globally, leading to significant financial repercussions for poultry farmers and even infecting cattle in the United States. The virus has left beaches strewn with the carcasses of birds and seals.

While H5N1 bird flu can potentially infect humans through contact with infected animals, the number of reported cases worldwide remains limited, with health officials asserting a low risk to humans.
