“Tragedy to Triumph: Teen Scores Winning Goal After Family’s Shooting”

Featured in:

In Providence, Rhode Island, high school senior hockey player Colin Dorgan, who tragically lost three family members in a recent ice rink shooting, scored the winning goal in double overtime on Wednesday, propelling the Blackstone Valley Co-op team into the next round of the playoffs.

Colin Dorgan’s mother and brother, Rhonda Dorgan and Aidan Dorgan, were victims of a targeted attack during a hockey game on February 16 in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. His grandfather, Gerald Dorgan, also succumbed to his injuries, while two others were seriously hurt. The shooter, identified as Robert Dorgan, passed away from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was known by other aliases.

Following a week-long suspension of all high school sports in Rhode Island after the tragic incident, the Blackstone Valley team returned to the ice, wearing jerseys adorned with hearts bearing the initials of the deceased family members.

In a poignant moment, Colin Dorgan, donning a patch with his family members’ initials, clinched the victory with a breakaway goal in double overtime against Portsmouth, expressing that it was a profound moment in his life.

Authorities revealed that the shooter had specifically targeted family members, and law enforcement praised the swift actions of bystanders who intervened to halt the attack. Among the injured were Rhonda Dorgan’s mother, Linda Dorgan, and family friend Thomas Geruso.

The community continues to mourn the devastating loss as they rally around Colin Dorgan and his team in the aftermath of this tragic event.
