Despite facing opposition from numerous public comments, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has approved a project involving a massive space mirror that would reflect a beam of light over a wide area on Earth. Reflect Orbital, the company behind the space mirror, promotes the initiative as a way to provide “sunlight on demand” for various purposes like agriculture, solar energy, and search and rescue operations.
However, concerns have been raised by astronomers and various groups regarding the potential negative impacts of the project. These concerns include threats to wildlife dependent on a dark night sky, interference with astronomical research, and risks such as flash-blinding pilots and permanent eye damage to telescope users.
While the FCC’s approval covers one satellite, Reflect Orbital plans to launch an ambitious 50,000 satellites by 2035. This adds to the growing number of satellites proposed by companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin, contributing to the congestion in Earth’s orbit.
Regulation of activities in outer space falls under the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), which oversees space-related matters and international space law. While placing reflective objects in orbit is not explicitly prohibited by existing treaties, such activities are subject to consultation and considerations of other states’ interests.
Experts emphasize the need for regulations to address concerns related to light pollution and safeguarding the night sky. Collaborative efforts between organizations like the IAU and Reflect Orbital are underway to mitigate potential impacts on astronomy and the environment.
