Approximately 30 WestJet flight attendants staged a demonstration outside Halifax Stanfield International Airport due to a nationwide strike that commenced following unsuccessful contract talks between the airline and the union. All WestJet flights to and from Halifax were canceled for the day, causing inconvenience to numerous passengers, including Ed and Ann Meehan from the UK, who had to endure multiple flight cancellations and eventually rebooked their journey through Iceland, tarnishing their perception of Canada.
Ryan Callbeck, another affected traveler, expressed frustration over the lack of communication and support after his flight to Regina was canceled, leaving him and a group of eight stranded at the airport. Despite sympathizing with the flight attendants’ grievances, Callbeck highlighted the challenges and additional costs incurred due to the disrupted travel plans.
In response to the strike, 4,287 WestJet flight attendants across Canada walked off the job citing concerns over pay disparities and working conditions. WestJet assured affected passengers of refunds or alternative accommodations as necessary. Authorities at Halifax Stanfield International Airport advised passengers with upcoming WestJet bookings in the next three days to verify their flight status online before heading to the airport.
