The off-Broadway production, “Heated Rivalry: The Unauthorized Musical Parody,” is finally hitting home ice advantage in Toronto. The queer hockey romance, inspired by a popular Canadian TV series, will have a limited four-night run at Soulpepper Theatre starting on July 9. Canadian director-producer Alan Kliffer emphasizes the timing and momentum behind bringing the show to Canada, stating that it was the right moment for this move.
The concept for the musical parody originated from writer-composer Dylan MarcAurele after binge-watching the TV series “Heated Rivalry.” The idea of turning the love story between characters Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov into a musical quickly gained traction, evolving from initial songwriting sessions to sold-out concert readings and eventually to a successful off-Broadway production. Kliffer acknowledges the rapid success of the show in New York, with the original eight-week run extended due to its popularity.
Soulpepper Theatre in Toronto was chosen as the venue for the Canadian debut of the production, with Kliffer praising artistic director Paolo Santalucia and expressing excitement about collaborating with him. Santalucia believes that “Heated Rivalry” naturally aligns with Soulpepper’s ethos and values, describing it as a celebration of Canadian creativity and storytelling.
The upcoming Toronto performances, scheduled from July 9 to July 12, will be presented as staged concert readings due to logistical constraints. Despite this format, Kliffer assures that the essence of the show will not be compromised. Following the Toronto run, the Canadian cast will head to Montreal’s Just for Laughs comedy festival for additional performances.
Kliffer also reveals plans for expanding the production to the UK later this year, demonstrating the show’s growing popularity and international reach. Looking ahead, he envisions a full-stage production coming to Canada in the future, highlighting his ambition to showcase the musical on a larger scale. The opportunity for the TV series’ cast and creative team to witness the live production in Toronto adds an extra layer of significance to the show’s Canadian debut.
