“WestJet Flight Attendants Issue 72-Hour Strike Notice”

Featured in:

The union representing 4,400 flight attendants at WestJet has announced a 72-hour strike notice, potentially leading to a strike during the peak summer travel period.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees has stated that significant differences remain between the two parties on crucial matters.

Alia Hussain, chair of the union’s WestJet contingent, emphasized the necessity for changes and expressed dedication to achieving a fair agreement in a press release issued early Thursday.

“We have clearly outlined the required modifications and have diligently pursued a just resolution,” Hussain stated. “There is still an opportunity to avert a strike, and we are committed to continuous negotiations until this matter is resolved.”

In response to the union’s strike notice, WestJet has issued a 72-hour lockout notice, as stated in a company release.

WestJet, the second-largest airline in Canada, has expressed ongoing commitment to negotiations aimed at reaching a resolution.

WestJet CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech mentioned, “The decision to declare a lockout notice, in response to the union’s actions, was a carefully considered one. We regret the inconvenience and uncertainty experienced by our passengers due to this situation.”

“We highly appreciate the efforts and contributions of our cabin crew, and it is our duty to safeguard the operational continuity of our network and minimize the risks of inconveniencing our passengers, crew, and aircraft.”

Although the strike notice does not guarantee a strike, there is a possibility of job action starting as early as Sunday at 12:01 a.m. MT if an agreement is not reached between the parties.
