President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine had raised alarm over the critical situation his country is facing, labeling it as one of the most challenging periods in its history. The deadline set by Trump for Zelenskyy to accept his peace plan, perceived to be in favor of Russia, is approaching on November 27.
The joint statement by the leaders highlighted the importance of upholding the principle that borders should not be altered by force. They also voiced worries about the potential limitations on Ukraine’s armed forces, which could leave the country vulnerable to future attacks.
Trump’s 28-point peace plan for Ukraine includes contentious provisions such as territorial concessions, military size restrictions, and renunciation of NATO aspirations, which align with Russian demands. However, the plan also includes elements that Russia may find unfavorable, like withdrawing its troops from certain captured areas in Ukraine.
In response to Trump’s proposal, Zelenskyy addressed the nation, acknowledging the intense pressure his country is under due to the impending decision. The international community, including Canada, the European Council, the European Commission, and several other nations, convened to discuss the situation.
Despite Trump’s absence at the G20 summit, Carney expressed willingness to collaborate with Ukraine and the U.S. in refining the peace plan. He emphasized the importance of key elements in the draft plan for achieving a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.
While Trump emphasized that his current proposal is not final, critics like global affairs analyst Michael Bociurkiw labeled the plan as disastrous for Ukraine. Bociurkiw warned that accepting any part of the plan could jeopardize Ukraine’s sovereignty.
Carney engaged in bilateral meetings with various leaders, reaffirming support for Ukraine and emphasizing the need for its involvement in any peace settlement. The G20 summit discussions also addressed pressing global challenges, including the climate crisis.
