“CONCACAF Monitors Violence in Mexico Amid Champions Cup Progress”

Featured in:

The governing body of soccer in North America is closely monitoring the escalating violence in Mexico as its international tournament progresses. CONCACAF, responsible for overseeing the sport in North America, Central America, and the Caribbean, emphasized the safety and security of all participants in the Champions Cup.

In the 27-club tournament, two Canadian teams are still in contention. Atlético Ottawa from the Canadian Premier League (CPL) is scheduled to play against Major League Soccer’s (MLS) Nashville SC, while the Vancouver Whitecaps will host Costa Rican side C.S. Cartaginés.

Should Vancouver and Ottawa progress, they will next face MLS opponents and potentially compete against Liga MX clubs in Mexico in the quarterfinals. Earlier in the competition, CPL teams Vancouver FC and Forge encountered Liga MX clubs but were eliminated in their two-legged series.

Following the death of a prominent drug cartel leader in Mexico, tourists and locals in various areas are advised to take shelter due to widespread violence. CONCACAF is in constant communication with Liga MX, clubs, and local authorities, closely monitoring the situation and providing updates as necessary.

On Sunday, four high-profile soccer matches were postponed after the Mexican army took down Nemesio Ruben Oseguera Cervantes, also known as “El Mencho,” the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel near Guadalajara. Subsequently, cartel members engaged in destructive activities, including burning vehicles and obstructing highways in multiple regions.

Mexico is set to co-host the FIFA World Cup with Canada and the United States, commencing on June 11. The evolving situation in Mexico raises concerns as the tournament progresses.
