Climate Plans Lagging: U.N. Report Shows Minimal Impact

Featured in:

All nations worldwide were tasked this year with presenting enhanced strategies to combat climate change. However, a recent United Nations report reveals that these plans have had minimal impact on curbing the future warming of Earth. The withdrawal of the United States from these efforts has offset a significant portion of the progress made.

The latest climate mitigation plans, which are required every five years under the 2015 Paris Agreement, are projected to reduce future warming by about 0.3 degrees Celsius compared to previous estimations. Only one-third of the countries that are part of the agreement, representing 63% of global emissions, have submitted updated climate plans.

Canada submitted its most recent plan in February, but it has been deemed “highly insufficient” by the Climate Action Tracker. The country’s emissions reduction targets fall short of the goals set for 2030 and 2035, as reported by Environment and Climate Change Canada and the Institut de l’énergie Trottier at Polytechnique Montreal.

Ross Linden-Fraser from the Canadian Climate Institute noted that while Canada has established a robust process for setting climate targets, there has been a lack of follow-through on commitments. The need for a coordinated policy reset to transition to a net-zero energy system was emphasized in a recent report by the Institut de l’énergie Trottier.

In contrast, the U.S. administration’s policies, characterized by the rollback of environmental regulations and hindrance of green energy projects, are projected to contribute an additional 0.1-degree Celsius of warming. The impact of this warming is significant for vulnerable communities and ecosystems globally, affecting various aspects such as heat waves, ocean heat waves, and sea-level rise.

The primary driver of global temperature increase is the release of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide from the burning of fossil fuels such as oil, gas, and coal. To align with the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius since pre-industrial times, countries need to detail how they will reduce emissions of these gases in their climate plans.

Despite efforts to reduce emissions, current policies are on track to lead to 2.8 degrees Celsius of warming, underscoring the urgency of the upcoming UN climate talks in Belem, Brazil. Even with substantial cuts in emissions from fossil fuels, global temperatures are expected to rise by at least 1.7 degrees Celsius this century, necessitating subsequent efforts to mitigate further warming.

UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen emphasized the need for accelerated action, acknowledging the progress made but stressing the necessity to expedite climate mitigation measures. The United States, which initially pledged significant emission reductions before withdrawing from the Paris Agreement, plays a crucial role in determining the future trajectory of global emissions.

In conclusion, the international community faces the challenge of bridging the emissions gap caused by the U.S. withdrawal, requiring additional efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions globally. The upcoming UN climate talks present a pivotal opportunity for world leaders to take decisive action in combatting climate change and transitioning to a sustainable future.
