Nathan Rourke shined at the CFL awards ceremony, with the West Division making a notable impact on Thursday evening. The B.C. Lions’ quarterback clinched the George Reed Trophy for being the CFL’s outstanding player and was recognized as the top Canadian at Club Regent Casino. Rourke joined a select group of players, including Brady Oliveira, Jon Cornish, Russ Jackson, and Tony Gabriel, who have achieved both distinctions in the same season.
Expressing his gratitude, Rourke remarked on the legendary status of the aforementioned players within the CFL, emphasizing the significance of carrying on their legacy and upholding the league’s traditions. Trey Vaval of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers also stood out, securing accolades for top rookie and special-teams player.
Other notable winners included Mathieu Betts from the B.C. Lions, who was named the defensive player, and Jermarcus Hardrick of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, recognized as the outstanding lineman. The awards were determined through a voting process involving the Football Reporters of Canada and all nine CFL head coaches, with a total of fifty-three ballots cast.
Additionally, Logan Ferland, an offensive lineman with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, was honored with the Jake Gaudaur Veterans’ Trophy for exemplifying attributes akin to Canada’s veterans. Andrew Peirson of the B.C. Lions received the Tom Pate Memorial Award for his outstanding sportsmanship and contributions to the community.
Rourke, hailing from Victoria, achieved career-high statistics in passing yards, touchdowns, rushing yards (leading among quarterbacks), and rushing touchdowns. His outstanding performance contributed to the B.C. Lions leading the CFL in offensive points, net yards, and passing yards per game. Despite an impressive regular season, B.C.’s journey came to an end with a defeat against Saskatchewan in the last game.
Reflecting on his accolades, Rourke expressed his desire to have played in the Grey Cup game, highlighting the team effort behind his success. Looking ahead, he remains optimistic about the team’s future and their continual growth. The upcoming Grey Cup will feature a matchup between Saskatchewan and the Montreal Alouettes.
