“Competition Bureau Probes Grocery Prices in Canada”

Featured in:

The Competition Bureau is initiating an inquiry into the impact of competition within the food supply chain on the pricing of groceries for Canadian consumers. The bureau will focus on three main areas: production and processing, transportation and distribution, and retail pricing strategies. This comprehensive review aims to identify areas where regulatory intervention may be necessary and suggest potential measures to enhance affordability.

Jeanne Pratt, the interim commissioner of competition, emphasized the significance of food costs to all Canadians and highlighted that robust competition can play a crucial role in maintaining reasonable prices. Pratt also urged industry stakeholders to provide input on their experiences.

The upcoming investigation will expand on the conclusions of the bureau’s 2023 study on the retail grocery market, which indicated that increased competition could lead to price reductions and foster innovation. The final report, due to be released next spring, will contain insights and policy recommendations for enhancing competition throughout the food supply chain.
