“Revitalized Mogadishu: Bowling Alley Symbolizes Renewal”

Featured in:

In Mogadishu, Somalia’s capital city, a new bowling alley has emerged amidst a history of conflict, symbolizing a revitalization in a once war-torn region. The city, plagued by 35 years of civil unrest and militant attacks, saw millions of residents flee due to security concerns posed by al-Shabab, a terrorist group linked to al-Qaeda.

However, recent advancements in security, increased governmental presence, and rising private investments have encouraged a resurgence of normalcy in daily life. The reopening of cafes, bustling beaches, and congested streets demonstrate the city’s transformation.

The Feynuus Bowling Center, established last year, has become a popular spot for locals and returning Somalis from the diaspora who bring fresh business ideas and investments. Visitors, including Hudoon Abdi, a Somali Canadian, express surprise at the newfound safety and encourage others to explore the city.

Despite ongoing security challenges, checkpoints and secure zones are now a routine part of life in Mogadishu. Yet, the existence of recreational spaces like the bowling alley signifies a positive shift in the city’s psyche, providing a safe haven for the younger generation to socialize.

Sadaq Abdurahman, the bowling center manager, notes the facility’s role in creating employment opportunities for youths in a country where unemployment stands at 21.4%. This business venture, along with others, underlines Mogadishu’s economic growth trajectory, driven by a mix of private sector initiatives, international aid, and government-led reconstruction efforts.

Experts, like Ahmed Khadar Abdi Jama, an economics lecturer at the University of Somalia, highlight the importance of such innovative businesses in catering to the needs of returning diaspora members and the expanding middle class, contributing to the anticipated rise in Somalia’s GDP.
