Israeli gunfire resulted in the deaths of three Palestinians in the Gaza Strip on Monday, located north of the city of Rafah under Israeli jurisdiction, as reported by local health authorities. This incident added strain to the delicate ceasefire supported by the United States.
The Israeli military released a statement earlier in the day stating that their forces had encountered “terrorists” who had crossed the yellow line, indicating the areas still under Israeli control. The military claimed that these individuals posed an immediate threat as they advanced towards Israeli troops in southern Gaza, leading to the fatal confrontation. However, no concrete evidence was provided to support this claim.
Medical personnel confirmed that one of the deceased was a woman, while the identities of the other two individuals remain unknown at this time.
The recent escalation follows a series of Israeli airstrikes in the region, sparking accusations between Hamas and Israel regarding violations of the fragile ceasefire that halted a two-year conflict. Residents reported ongoing demolitions of houses by Israeli forces in the eastern regions of Rafah, Khan Younis, and Gaza City, where military operations are still underway.
Since the ceasefire took effect on October 10, most hostilities have subsided, allowing hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians to return to their ravaged homes in Gaza. Israel has withdrawn its troops from urban areas, facilitating the entry of additional humanitarian aid.
Hamas fulfilled its commitment by releasing all 20 living hostages held in Gaza, in exchange for around 2,000 Palestinian prisoners and detainees held by Israel. However, the handover of hostage remains remains incomplete, with Hamas citing difficulties in the process while Israel accuses the group of deliberate delays.
Despite the ceasefire, sporadic violence continues to occur. Palestinian health officials reported that Israeli military actions have resulted in the deaths of 239 individuals in Gaza since the ceasefire came into effect, with nearly half of the casualties occurring in a single day during Israeli retaliatory strikes following an attack on its troops.
Israel acknowledged the loss of three soldiers and stated that it had targeted numerous militants in response to the escalating tensions.
On Monday, the Gaza Health Ministry received the bodies of 45 Palestinians killed by Israeli forces, who had been in Israeli custody. This handover brought the total number of returned Palestinian bodies to 270, with only 78 of them being identified by authorities due to challenges in the identification process, including signs of abuse and torture. The lack of DNA testing kits in Gaza has complicated forensic work, prompting officials to post photos of the remains online in hopes of families recognizing their loved ones.
Israel recently confirmed the receipt of remains of three hostages from Gaza, with Hamas having returned a total of 20 out of 28 bodies of hostages previously buried in the region.
The situation remains tense, with both sides cautiously navigating the ceasefire terms amidst ongoing uncertainties and challenges in the conflict-ridden region.
