“US and Russia Restore Military Talks, Aim for Peace”

Featured in:

The United States and Russia have agreed to revive high-level military discussions, marking the first time in over four years. This move suggests improved relations between the two nations since President Donald Trump resumed office and aimed to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. The communication was halted in late 2021 due to escalating tensions before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The re-established military channel aims to facilitate ongoing efforts for a lasting peace, as confirmed by the U.S. European Command following discussions between senior American and Russian military representatives in the United Arab Emirates. General Alexus Grynkewich, overseeing U.S. and NATO forces in Europe, participated in talks in Abu Dhabi with American, Russian, and Ukrainian officials to address the conflict in Ukraine.

Simultaneously, Moscow intensified attacks on Ukraine’s power grid, seemingly to disrupt civilian access to power and diminish public support for the conflict. Hostilities persisted along the approximately 1,000-kilometer front line in eastern and southern Ukraine.

The decision to reopen the military hotline signifies an attempt to de-escalate tensions that arose post-war commencement to prevent clashes between Russian and U.S. forces. In a specific incident in March 2023, an American MQ-9 Reaper drone was abandoned in the Black Sea after Russian fighter jets allegedly interfered with it, leading to a collision in international airspace.

Moscow has raised concerns about U.S. and NATO surveillance flights over the Black Sea and accused American flights of aiding Ukrainian attacks on Russian targets. NATO members have expressed increasing apprehension over airspace violations, with European officials describing these incidents as Russia testing NATO’s responses.

In a gesture to reduce tensions, Russia and Ukraine exchanged prisoners following talks in Abu Dhabi. The Russian Defence Ministry repatriated 157 Russian servicemen and three civilians, while Ukraine received 150 Ukrainian servicemen and seven civilians from Russian captivity. Prisoners released by Russia are currently in Belarus for medical assistance before returning to Russia for further treatment.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy disclosed that 55,000 Ukrainian troops have perished since the Russian invasion nearly four years ago. He emphasized the need for security assurances from the U.S. and Europe to deter potential post-war Russian aggression. The advocacy group Human Rights Watch reported a 31% increase in Ukrainian civilian casualties in 2025 compared to the previous year.

Additionally, Poland pledged to enhance supplies to Ukraine and collaborate on ammunition production. Ukrainian Economic Minister Mykhailo Fedorov mentioned that Russian forces lost access to Starlink terminals, impacting their command capabilities. Poland and Ukraine are exploring the exchange of weaponry, with the possibility of Warsaw receiving Ukrainian drones and Kyiv acquiring Polish MiG fighter jets.

Overnight, Russia launched 183 drones and two ballistic missiles at Ukraine, resulting in three injuries according to Ukrainian officials. The Russian Defence Ministry claimed to have downed 95 Ukrainian drones over multiple regions, including the Azov Sea and Crimea.
