U.S. President Donald Trump has officially modified the national security tariffs under Section 232 for certain aluminum, steel, and copper imports, as confirmed by the White House. Effective June 8, the tariffs on specific steel and aluminum derivative products will be reduced from 25 percent to 15 percent. This adjustment applies to various items such as agricultural machinery and residential heating, air conditioning, and ventilation equipment.
According to the proclamation, mobile industrial equipment like bulldozers and forklifts will now face a 15 percent tariff if imported from countries with trade agreements that warrant such treatment. Additionally, foreign companies can qualify for a 10 percent tariff if their capital equipment contains at least 85 percent U.S. melted or poured steel or aluminum by weight.
Two new categories, steel racks and aluminum lithographic plates, will now be subjected to a 25 percent duty on importation or withdrawal from bonded warehouses after 12:01 a.m. ET on June 8. These adjustments are set to remain effective until December 31, 2027, with the aim of encouraging immediate investments to enhance the country’s industrial foundation, as stated by the White House.
