Veterinarian in Winnipeg Ordered to Retire by 2026

Featured in:

Dr. Wenchao Zheng, a veterinarian in Winnipeg, has been directed to stop his practice by 2026 due to professional misconduct, including an incident where a cat named Shadow required amputation of a hind leg following a surgical error. Noelle McIvor, Shadow’s owner, expressed relief over this decision, as she was initially concerned about her pet’s quality of life. Dr. Zheng, who has a history of disciplinary actions, has agreed to retire by June 30, 2026, and is banned from performing orthopedic surgeries. Additionally, he must fulfill educational requirements, pay investigation costs, and post notices about his practice limitations. The Manitoba Veterinary Medical Association found Zheng guilty of ongoing disregard for sanctions and determined that his actions brought disrepute to the profession. Despite Zheng’s claims of unfair treatment, the association clarified that disciplinary actions were based on complaints from clients. This marks the first time the association has revoked a veterinarian’s license, signaling a severe penalty. Zheng, acknowledging his faults in Shadow’s case, has taken financial responsibility for the subsequent treatment. McIvor emphasized the need for stricter accountability for veterinarians with repeated misconduct findings, while a retired vet commended Zheng’s efforts to serve clients in a financially challenged area.
