“Huskies Secure Hardy Cup in Dramatic Comeback Win”

Featured in:

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies clinched a narrow 25-24 victory over the Regina Rams on Saturday, reclaiming the Hardy Cup and securing the Canada West football championship. This win served as redemption for last year’s 19-14 defeat. The 88th Hardy Cup witnessed a rare all-Saskatchewan championship showdown, the second in over twenty years, and marked the first consecutive provincial final between the two teams. The Regina Rams had previously seized their first all-Saskatchewan Hardy Cup title in more than two decades during the previous season.

In a dramatic fourth quarter turnaround, the Huskies, initially trailing 24-9, staged a remarkable comeback by scoring 16 unanswered points to capture the coveted title. Kicker Lucas Scott sealed the game with a crucial field goal, a pivotal moment in the Huskies’ season. Scott expressed his confidence in making the kick, stating that it was a dream come true for him.

Veteran running back Ryker Frank attributed the team’s second-half resurgence to their resilience and unwavering faith in each other. Head Coach Scott Flory commended the team’s focus and determination in the final minutes despite facing challenges and turnovers during the game.

Following this victory, the Huskies are one step closer to the Vanier Cup, set to take place in Regina later this month, a historic event for the city and Western Canada. Their next challenge awaits in the Mitchell Bowl against Queen’s University in Saskatchewan next week. Frank emphasized the team’s dedication, work ethic, and strong team culture as crucial elements in preparing for significant matchups like the upcoming bowl game.

Previously, the Huskies had secured the Hardy Cup in 2021 and 2022 but fell short in the Vanier Cup both years. They entered the postseason with an impressive 7-1 regular-season record, clinching the top spot in the Canada West conference. On the other hand, the Rams advanced to the final after a thrilling 32-29 double-overtime victory against the Manitoba Bisons in the semi-finals.

The Mitchell Bowl is scheduled for November 15 at 2:15 p.m. CST, where the Huskies will aim to continue their journey towards championship glory.
