Chinese Whistleblower Granted Asylum in the U.S.

Featured in:

The full interview with attorney Chen Chuangchuang sheds light on the case of Guan Heng, a Chinese whistleblower who recently obtained asylum in the U.S. Guan’s journey began when he decided to investigate China’s reported construction of detention camps for Uyghurs after reading a BuzzFeed News article in 2020. Using a telephoto lens, Guan documented the alleged camps in Xinjiang. Subsequently, he fled China, traveled to the U.S. via Ecuador and the Bahamas, and sought asylum, only to be caught in an ICE raid.

After a tumultuous five-year ordeal, a U.S. judge has approved Guan’s asylum request. Chen Chuangchuang praised Guan’s compelling testimony that detailed his reasons for leaving China and his actions. Guan, a traveler with a keen eye for anomalies, had observed troubling circumstances in Xinjiang during a previous visit in 2019.
