Israel Reopens Gaza Crossing for Limited Passengers

Featured in:

Dozens of individuals from Palestine were anticipated to either depart from or arrive in Gaza on Monday as Israel reopened the only pedestrian crossing to Egypt, marking a significant development in the ceasefire aimed at ending the conflict, albeit with stringent access restrictions.

Reports from Egyptian and Palestinian sources indicated that 50 Palestinians seeking to return to Gaza were undergoing processing on the Israeli-controlled side of the Palestinian border, with uncertainties surrounding their entry into the territory pending Israeli security screenings.

Gaza health officials disclosed that approximately 20,000 Palestinian children and adults in need of medical attention were hopeful of departing the ravaged region via the crossing. Meanwhile, numerous Palestinians residing outside Gaza were eager to enter and return to their homes.

Expressing concerns over the limited daily exits permitted through the crossing, Dr. Mohammed Abu Salmiya, the director of Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, emphasized the urgent need for more evacuations to cater to patients, including those requiring critical medical interventions such as open-heart surgeries or cancer treatments.

The ongoing situation at the Rafah crossing, shared with Israel alongside Gaza’s other crossings, has been a focal point under the ceasefire terms implemented since October. Notably, Israel’s military retains control over the area between the Rafah crossing and the primary Palestinian residential zone.

Five patients, each accompanied by two family members, were transported to the crossing compound from Gaza in a vehicle escorted by World Health Organization personnel on Monday, as per health officials. Palestinian authorities attributed delays to Israeli security procedures, while Israel’s military refrained from immediate comments.

Against this backdrop, concerns were raised regarding the plight of patients awaiting evacuation, with Israel’s restrictions on medical transfers to hospitals in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem triggering challenges for Palestinians seeking essential treatment unavailable in Gaza.

As efforts continue to facilitate the movement of individuals through the Rafah crossing, a process overseen by European Union border patrol agents with limited Palestinian presence, hopes remain high for a gradual increase in travelers over time, contingent on the system’s effectiveness.

Egypt, poised to receive war-wounded patients from Gaza, has made preparations across 150 hospitals to accommodate evacuees. Additionally, the Egyptian Red Crescent has established “safe spaces” on the Egyptian side of the crossing to assist individuals arriving from the Gaza Strip.

As the ceasefire’s second phase unfolds, which entails establishing a new Palestinian governing body in Gaza, deploying an international security force, disarming Hamas, and initiating reconstruction efforts, the complexities of the agreement pose significant challenges moving forward.
