Canadian footballer Jonathan David has been crowned as the CONCACAF men’s player of the year for the 2024-25 season. The 25-year-old forward from Juventus received the prestigious award for his outstanding performances at both club and national team levels, making him the second Canadian male player to achieve this honor, following the footsteps of Alphonso Davies, who has won the award twice.
Having previously been nominated for the CONCACAF accolade in 2021, 2022, and 2023-24, David’s consistent excellence on the field has now been recognized with this esteemed title. On the women’s side, Melchie Dumornay of Haiti, who plays for OL Lyonnes in France, clinched the CONCACAF women’s player of the year award for the second consecutive year.
The selection for these awards, covering the period from August 2024 to July 2025, was determined through a voting process involving CONCACAF member association players, coaches, media representatives, and fans. Jonathan David, having scored 37 goals in 67 appearances, holds the record for the highest number of goals scored by a male player in Canada’s football history.
In response to the announcement, CONCACAF president Victor Montagliani, who is a FIFA vice-president as well, extended his congratulations to both David and Dumornay for their exceptional contributions during the past season. David’s remarkable achievements include scoring seven goals in the Champions League for Lille, establishing a new record for the most goals by a CONCACAF player in a single tournament this century. Furthermore, he became Lille’s top scorer in European competitions before making a transfer to Juventus in July.
Despite facing challenges in finding the net for Juventus, David managed to secure one goal and one assist in 13 appearances for the Italian club. Other notable nominees in the men’s category included players from Mexico, the United States, and Costa Rica. Dumornay’s consecutive wins in the women’s division have placed her in a select group of players, alongside American Alex Morgan.
Additionally, Dumornay’s exceptional performances in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, where she was named the young player of the season and featured in the Best XI, underscore her talent and impact in the sport. Notably, Jimenez’s impressive free-kick goal against Canada in the CONCACAF Nations League Finals was voted as the goal of the year, further highlighting the remarkable achievements within the CONCACAF football community.
