The head of Major League Soccer has long believed that Vancouver possesses the potential to become a top soccer market. With the Vancouver Whitecaps achieving new successes on the field, league commissioner Don Garber is visiting the city to advocate for change. Garber aims to ensure the sustainability of the team’s success in the long term, beyond just acknowledging past achievements.
During his visit, Garber will engage with business leaders and public officials, with a primary focus on discussing the Whitecaps’ stadium arrangement. The team currently plays at B.C. Place, a 55,000-seat stadium in Vancouver’s downtown area, which has been their home since 1983. Owned by PavCo, the stadium hosts various events, including sports matches and concerts.
Garber expressed concerns about the current stadium deal, citing scheduling conflicts and limited revenue from concessions as key issues impacting the Whitecaps’ financial sustainability. A notable incident from last year saw the team forfeiting home-field advantage for a playoff game due to a prior booking at B.C. Place for a motocross show on the same date.
While B.C. Place mentioned providing over 40 days per year for Whitecaps matches, the club’s CEO Axel Schuster highlighted the disparity in food and beverage revenue compared to other MLS teams. The Whitecaps’ lease at B.C. Place is set to expire at the end of December, with ongoing discussions regarding a possible renewal.
In parallel, the Whitecaps have initiated talks with the City of Vancouver about constructing a new soccer-specific stadium at the PNE fairgrounds. These discussions follow the announcement of the club’s ownership group exploring the sale of the franchise. Despite the stadium challenges, Garber remains optimistic about finding a resolution that benefits both the team and the community.
Looking ahead, the Whitecaps are enjoying a successful season, finishing second in the Western Conference and advancing in the playoffs. The addition of German soccer icon Thomas Müller to the team has significantly bolstered their performance, with Garber praising Müller’s impact on the squad and the league as a whole.
