“BC Grape Growers Struggle as Market Oversaturated”

Featured in:

In the southern Okanagan region of British Columbia, some wine grape growers are facing challenges in selling their produce this year, following two years of severe winter damage. Despite a successful harvest season, farmers are struggling to find buyers for their grapes due to a provincial program allowing wineries to import grapes from the United States, leading to oversaturation in the market.

Amarjeet Gill, a grape grower near Osoyoos, has nearly 100 tonnes of red wine grapes still on his vines, with no winery willing to purchase them despite his efforts. Gill is concerned about repaying his loans as the grapes are starting to become overripe on the vine.

Winery owner Jesse Gill, unrelated to Amarjeet, has observed similar struggles among other growers in the region. The challenges selling the harvest are partly attributed to the B.C. government’s decision to extend the vintage replacement program, which eases regulations on importing grapes from the U.S. and other regions following crop losses from extreme weather conditions.

Jesse Gill has initiated a “Save the Grapes” campaign at his Back Door Winery in Summerland, offering additional tank space to accommodate unsold fruit from struggling growers. Despite concerns raised about the program’s impact on local growers, industry leaders argue that market conditions, rather than the import program, are the primary reason for growers’ difficulties in selling their grapes.

While some growers continue to face challenges in selling their produce, the program is set to expire after this year, according to Agriculture Minister Lana Popham. The industry has made efforts to prioritize the purchase of B.C. grapes, including establishing online marketplaces for growers to showcase their products.

Overall, the situation highlights the complexities faced by grape growers in balancing market demands and government programs aimed at supporting the industry.
