In the WTA Finals, Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski and her New Zealand partner Erin Routliffe were defeated by Czechia’s Katerina Siniakova and American Taylor Townsend with a score of 6-4, 7-6 (3). Despite being the No. 3 seeds and leading 5-2 in the second set, Siniakova and Townsend mounted a comeback.
Routliffe missed the opportunity to serve out the set at 5-3 when Townsend’s decisive return shot secured a crucial break. Townsend sealed the victory with a service winner on her first match point during the tiebreak. Previously, Dabrowski and Routliffe had bested the same opponents in last year’s WTA Finals championship match and this year’s U.S. Open final, with the head-to-head record now standing at two wins each.
Townsend and Siniakova gained another significant break when the first set was tied 3-3, establishing control over the match. Townsend’s unbroken serve performance contributed to their 2-0 standing in the group stage. Dabrowski and Routliffe, currently 1-1, are set to compete against Hungary’s Timea Babos and Brazil’s Luisa Stefani in their final round-robin match.
