“Hamilton Healthcare Prescribes Nature Passes for Well-Being”

Featured in:

Patients in Hamilton now have the opportunity to receive prescriptions for access to nature through the PaRx program. This initiative enables healthcare providers to prescribe nature passes, granting patients a 30-day membership pass to Hamilton Conservation Authority (HCA) sites.

Paul Stacho, a resident of Stoney Creek, shared how access to conservation areas has been transformative for him. Overcoming financial barriers to outdoor activities, Stacho emphasized the profound impact nature can have on one’s well-being, stating that it was instrumental in saving his life.

Having started visiting HCA sites in the mid-90s following a life-altering workplace accident, Stacho found solace in nature as he dealt with chronic pain, insomnia, depression, respiratory issues, and suicidal thoughts. Although he did not have a formal nature prescription at the time, his doctors encouraged him to engage in activities he enjoyed from his home country, such as mountain hiking. Stacho attributed his slow but steady recovery to reconnecting with nature and expressed optimism about his future at 71 years old.

Healthcare providers in Hamilton can easily register with PaRx to issue prescriptions to patients. Once prescribed, patients can obtain a 30-day membership pass by completing an online form on the HCA website, with an accompanying $10 administrative fee. The passes vary in cost, including an annual parking pass priced at approximately $130.

The PaRx program, initiated by the BC Parks Foundation in 2020, aims to foster a connection between individuals and nature while promoting conservation awareness. Dr. Meghan Davis, based in Hamilton, highlighted the abundance of natural spaces surrounding the city and emphasized the importance of removing cost barriers to encourage patients to prioritize time outdoors, enhancing both physical and mental well-being.

Partnering with various organizations nationwide, the PaRx program has garnered support from entities like Conservation Halton, Parks Canada, the Canadian Medical Association, and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority. Launched in Halton in late 2024, the program has received positive feedback, with interim vice-president Dr. Stephen Chin emphasizing the significant health benefits of spending time in nature.

In addition to the PaRx program, the Hamilton Public Library offers day passes to Hamilton Conservation Authority, the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority, and Grand River Parks, further promoting access to outdoor recreational spaces.

For Stacho, his regular visits to HCA sites have been instrumental in his recovery journey, reigniting his passion for photography and providing a sanctuary to combat depression and negative thoughts. Reflecting on his routine visits, Stacho mentioned his enjoyment of spending time at the Westfield Heritage Village, highlighting the positive impact nature has had on his respiratory health and overall well-being.

The PaRx program in Hamilton underscores the importance of nature in promoting physical and mental health, offering individuals the opportunity to immerse themselves in natural surroundings for improved well-being and quality of life.
