Ruth Hasman, a retired seamstress based in Vancouver, has devoted her time to restoring a wide range of teddy bears, from those damaged by pet attacks to those simply showing signs of wear and tear. Over the course of nearly twenty years, she estimates having repaired numerous stuffed animals from various locations across North America.
Her home in Vancouver is a treasure trove of stuffed toy parts, buttons, eyes, and fur, showcasing her dedication to her craft. Hasman’s services include fur grafts, eyeball replacements, stuffing replenishments, and even spa treatments for stuffed animals in need of some extra care. She goes the extra mile for her clients, often scouring thrift stores to find the perfect fabric match.
Each teddy bear that comes to Hasman is unique, presenting her with a new challenge every time. She takes pride in the stories behind the toys, finding joy in learning about their sentimental value to their owners. One of her most memorable repairs was a 115-year-old bear that had been cherished by five generations of a family.
One of Hasman’s satisfied clients, Vedrana Petrovic, shared her experience of having her plush golden retriever, Sylvester, restored to its former glory. Petrovic, who relied on Sylvester for emotional support during university, was amazed by the transformation. She described Sylvester as looking deflated and floppy before his visit to the teddy bear hospital but now sees him as a reliable cuddle companion for years to come.
Looking ahead, Hasman is currently training a successor in Maple Ridge, with hopes that they will carry on her legacy when she eventually steps back from the business. However, for now, she remains dedicated to her craft, fueled by the heartfelt stories that accompany each teddy bear she restores.
