“Construction Crane Tragedy Derails Thai Passenger Train”

Featured in:

A tragic incident unfolded in northeastern Thailand when a construction crane toppled onto a moving passenger train, causing a derailment that resulted in the loss of at least 32 lives and left numerous others injured. The derailment took place on a section of a major high-speed rail project that is part of a grand scheme to establish a transportation link between China and various parts of Southeast Asia.

The crane, involved in the construction of an elevated railway segment, collapsed while the train was en route from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani province, as reported by the public relations office for Nakhon Ratchasima province where the tragic event occurred. Pictures circulated in the Thai media depicted billows of smoke rising above the scene, with construction machinery hanging precariously between two concrete pillars of support.

At the site of the accident, rescue personnel were seen atop overturned train carriages, some of which had significant damage with visible tears along their sides. Debris from the fallen crane was strewn along the railway tracks, while medical responders tended to injured passengers.

Following the incident, Transport Minister Piphat Ratchakitprakan disclosed that the ill-fated train comprised three carriages, with the last two bearing the brunt of the destruction. He confirmed that there were 195 individuals onboard and announced the initiation of an official investigation.

The collapsed elevated section forms part of a collaborative Thai-Chinese high-speed rail venture aimed at linking Bangkok with Nong Khai province on the Laos border. This extensive rail project, valued at approximately $23 billion Canadian dollars, is integral to a broader plan to connect China with Southeast Asia through Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative.

This tragic event follows a similar disaster in August 2024 when a railway tunnel collapse in Nakhon Ratchasima claimed the lives of three workers, with heavy rainfall believed to have contributed to the catastrophe.
