“Nail-Biter in Banff: Backhouse Edges Out Buckingham by One Vote”

Featured in:

In the recent Banff council election, Michelle Backhouse secured the final seat by just one vote, edging out Allan Buckingham with 742 votes to his 741. Initially leading by two votes on election night, Backhouse’s victory was confirmed after a recount revealed the narrow margin. Reflecting on her win, Backhouse attributed her ability to handle pressure to her training as a firefighter, stating, “I’ve been taught to manage stress, and the outcome is going to be the best possible.”

Buckingham, who was running for council for the third time, expressed surprise at the razor-thin difference in votes. He acknowledged the competitiveness of the election, emphasizing the importance of each vote. Despite feeling optimistic about his campaign and receiving positive feedback, Buckingham fell short of securing the seat. Both candidates agreed that there was no room for second-guessing their campaign efforts.

While Buckingham had the option to seek a judicial review, he deemed the recount sufficient for a final decision. If the race had ended in a tie, provincial legislation dictates a random selection process. Political scientist Jack Lucas highlighted the rarity of a one-vote difference in elections, emphasizing the significance of individual votes in determining outcomes.

Low voter turnout has been a recurring issue in the Bow Valley, with historical percentages falling below 50%. The most recent Banff municipal election saw a turnout of approximately 39%, continuing a downward trend from previous years. Former mayor and councillor Leslie Taylor expressed concern over the declining voter participation, underscoring the impact of each vote in shaping community leadership and decisions.

As elections across various levels of government have shown, every vote holds weight in determining the course of governance and representation.
