Measles Epidemic Persists in Northern British Columbia

Featured in:

Despite an increase in summer immunizations, health authorities report that the measles epidemic in northeastern British Columbia is persisting. Dr. Rakel Kling, a medical health officer at Northern Health, highlighted that the virus is still spreading notably in Fort St. John. Kling mentioned that infections are rapidly circulating within households, with entire families experiencing multiple cases of measles.

The worst outbreak in British Columbia since 2014 initiated at a local elementary school earlier this year and swiftly extended to various public places, including shops, businesses, and the community hospital. As of October 23, the B.C. Centre for Disease Control confirmed a total of 245 measles cases in northern B.C., with the majority concentrated in the northeast region.

Dr. Kling expressed concerns over the reported numbers, emphasizing that these figures likely underrepresent the actual situation due to unreported cases. The surge in vaccinations during the summer months saw a significant increase in uptake, with rates soaring by 45% in May, 117% in June, and 221% in July compared to the previous year.

While vaccination rates slightly decreased from August to September, they remained notably high. Kling stressed the importance of achieving a 95% vaccination coverage for herd immunity, a threshold not met in any northern region. She noted that many communities in the northeast hover between 60% to 70% vaccination coverage.

According to Northern Health’s projections, Fort St. John could continue to witness at least five new cases daily due to the ongoing high transmission rate. Dr. Kling pointed out that while this forecast serves as a precautionary measure, the future trajectory remains uncertain.

Kling advised families with concerns about vaccinations to consult their healthcare providers for guidance. She underscored the severity of measles complications and the importance of preventive measures to avert potential health risks.
