“Wolf Warning: Leave Dogs at Home for Safety”

Featured in:

Parks Canada is advising individuals to refrain from bringing their dogs to the Long Beach area of Pacific Rim National Park on Vancouver Island following two recent incidents involving wolves targeting pets.

According to an official statement, the agency noted a rise in wolves displaying habituated and bold behavior towards visitors, with one incident involving wolves showing increased boldness in approaching leashed dogs. In one encounter, two wolves aggressively approached a visitor with a leashed dog, closely pursuing them for an extended period.

In another incident, two wolves closely approached a beach walker, causing the individual to move into the water. Wolf encounters are common during this period in the park, with previous closures occurring due to similar incidents involving these animals.

Currently, a “wolf in area” advisory is in effect, advising visitors to hike in groups, monitor children closely, make noise, and remain vigilant. The warning recommends keeping dogs on a leash or leaving them at home if feasible.

While wolf attacks on humans are rare, WildSafeBC highlights the potential danger of food-conditioned and habituated wolves, especially towards pets. The organization emphasizes the importance of deterring wolves rather than engaging with them to maintain their wariness of humans.

In the event of a wolf encounter, Parks Canada advises individuals to make themselves appear larger, yell, wave arms, and slowly retreat while maintaining eye contact. Running and crouching are discouraged. If a wolf persists, individuals are instructed to throw objects or use bear spray for defense.
