“Expert Warns of ‘Fanxiety’ Phenomenon During Intense Sports Moments”

Featured in:

When a Dodgers pitcher faces off against a Blue Jays batter, the intense excitement felt by fans can cause real physical reactions akin to heightened stress levels, according to medical professionals who have experienced the heart-racing effects themselves.

Referred to as “fanxiety” by a cardiologist, this phenomenon is evident in short social media videos capturing individuals pacing, throwing soft objects at screens, or shielding their eyes during critical moments in various sports such as baseball, football, hockey, and soccer.

Dr. Greg Wells, a scientist at Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto specializing in exercise physiology, explains that when fans watch their favorite team in action, their eyes and ears transmit information to the brain, triggering a physiological response due to their emotional investment in the game.

Although Wells teaches techniques for maintaining composure under pressure, he candidly admits to engaging in enthusiastic reactions while watching games, expressing his love for the intense experience.

Emotionally invested spectators experience joy when a play goes in their team’s favor, as their bodies release endorphins, but if the outcome is unfavorable, they also endure genuine emotional distress.

Dr. Wells further elaborates that prolonged tense moments, like a pitcher facing a batter, can induce anxiety in viewers as they anticipate uncertain outcomes, causing physiological responses like increased heart rate, breathing, and blood pressure as the body readies itself for a fight-or-flight reaction triggered by hormones like adrenaline.

The release of cortisol and adrenaline in response to perceived threats heightens awareness levels, elevates blood pressure, induces sweating and trembling, and prompts the liver to release glucose to fuel a burst of energy.

Studies indicate that spectators during high-stakes games undergo physiological changes, and medical professionals warn that extreme stress during such events could potentially trigger adverse cardiovascular responses, particularly in individuals with pre-existing heart conditions or risk factors.

Dr. Jacob Udell, a cardiologist at Women’s College Hospital and Toronto General Hospital, notes that watching sports at home can lead to an increase in heart rate akin to a moderate workout, emphasizing the importance of managing stress during intense game-watching sessions.

For those with underlying heart conditions, it is crucial to adhere to prescribed medications to mitigate potential cardiovascular risks during emotionally charged events like sports games.

Implementing coping mechanisms like box breathing and visualization of calming scenarios can aid in reducing strain on the cardiovascular system and alleviate stress, ensuring a healthier experience while enjoying nail-biting sports moments.
