The upcoming Canadian Screen Awards will pay tribute to actor Mike Myers, sportscaster Hazel Mae, and other notable individuals as part of this year’s Canadian Screen Week celebrations.
Mike Myers, Hazel Mae, Canadian Film Centre executive director Maxine Bailey, and filmmaker Chandler Levack’s film “Mile End Kicks” will be recognized for their significant contributions and achievements in the film and television industry. Tammy Frick, the CEO of the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television, expressed excitement about honoring these exceptional recipients who serve as inspirations for future storytellers and showcase Canada’s remarkable talent and innovation on the global stage.
Canadian Screen Week is scheduled to take place in Toronto from May 27 to May 31, with the highlight being the Canadian Screen Awards ceremony recognizing excellence in Canadian cinema, television, and digital media.
Mike Myers, the iconic Canadian actor known for his roles in “Saturday Night Live,” “Austin Powers,” and “Shrek,” will receive the prestigious Academy Icon Award this year. The Canadian Academy acknowledges Myers as one of the most versatile performers of his generation, with over 80 film and television credits to his name in various roles such as actor, writer, producer, and director.
Hazel Mae, a prominent figure in Canadian sportscasting and a familiar face at Toronto Blue Jays games, will be presented with the Gordon Sinclair Award for Broadcast Journalism. Her exceptional work capturing the emotions and moments during events like the World Series has earned her recognition and accolades, including the Jack Graney Award from the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.
Maxine Bailey, the executive director of the Canadian Film Centre, will be honored with the Changemaker Award for her efforts in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in Canadian media. Bailey’s initiatives aim to create a more inclusive and accessible environment within the industry, building on her past work at the Toronto International Film Festival and her advocacy for gender parity in Canadian filmmaking.
Chandler Levack’s film “Mile End Kicks” will receive the Sustainable Production Award for its commitment to environmental sustainability in both its production practices and thematic elements. The film, set in Montreal’s Mile End neighborhood, not only showcases the local music scene but also integrates sustainable practices into its creative process, emphasizing community impact and environmental responsibility.
The Canadian Screen Awards ceremony, to be hosted by actor Andrew Phung, will be broadcast on CBC and streamed on CBC Gem on May 31 at 8 p.m. ET. This year’s event will also be simulcast on Bell-owned CTV and Crave, as well as Corus-owned Global and STACKTV.
