Israeli airstrikes in Gaza kill 26 amid ceasefire breach

Featured in:

Israeli airstrikes in Gaza resulted in the deaths of 26 people on Tuesday following allegations by Israel against Hamas for breaching a ceasefire deal brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump. Among the casualties were five individuals in a house struck in the Bureij refugee camp, four in a building in Gaza City’s Sabra neighborhood, and five in a car in Khan Younis, including two children. The bombardments continued into Wednesday, encompassing various areas in Gaza City.

An Israeli military official cited a violation of the ceasefire by Hamas, prompting the strikes, although specific reasons were not disclosed in an initial statement from Netanyahu’s office. Notably, Israel informed the United States before initiating the attacks. Contrary to reports of an exchange of fire between Israeli forces and Hamas in Rafah, Hamas denied involvement in the alleged attack on Israeli forces.

While Hamas initially intended to transfer the body of a missing hostage to Israel, the plan was postponed due to perceived ceasefire violations by Israel. The ceasefire, aimed at ending a two-year conflict, involved Hamas releasing living hostages in exchange for Palestinian convicts and detainees, as Israel withdrew troops and ceased offensive operations. Both sides have accused each other of breaching the ceasefire terms.

Israel claimed that Hamas manipulated the recovery of a hostage’s remains to create a false impression of compliance. The search for bodies has intensified with the assistance of heavy machinery from Egypt, particularly in areas where Hamas tunnels are suspected to hold remaining hostages. Despite challenges in locating bodies amidst destruction, Hamas reaffirmed its commitment to fulfilling ceasefire conditions.

Israeli officials have urged for stringent actions against Hamas, although any response is subject to approval from Washington, the mediator of the fragile ceasefire. Efforts to locate missing bodies have accelerated, with bulldozers aiding in search operations in various parts of Gaza. The conflict, marked by significant casualties and destruction, continues to impact the region as efforts persist to recover and identify victims.
