“Stranger’s Liver Donation Saves Woman’s Life”

Featured in:

A generous woman from the southern border selflessly donated part of her liver to save a life. Stephanie Azzarello faced a unique challenge in 2023 when she was informed that she needed a liver transplant to survive due to primary sclerosing cholangitis, a rare liver disease. Despite being on the waiting list for a liver from a deceased donor, the chances were slim. With no suitable match among family and friends, she had to seek a public donor to undergo the major surgery.

Dr. Mamatha Bhat, a clinician scientist at the University Health Network Ajmera Transplant Centre in Toronto, recognized the shortcomings in the current liver transplant prioritization system based on the MELD score. This system often disadvantaged women and individuals with rare conditions like PSC. Bhat identified the need for a more comprehensive evaluation method and initiated a project to develop an artificial intelligence system funded by the Canadian Institutes for Health Research.

The AI system aims to consider various factors beyond traditional blood tests to improve patient prioritization for liver transplants. Early results suggest that the new system could enhance the allocation process, potentially reducing mortality rates for patients on the waiting list. Data from the Canadian Institute for Health Information revealed the critical need for liver transplants in Canada, emphasizing the urgency of improving the system.

Following a social media campaign, Trisha Beard from Portland, Oregon, volunteered to donate part of her liver to Azzarello after learning about her struggle. Despite initial obstacles due to living in the U.S., Beard persevered and underwent testing to confirm her compatibility as a donor. The successful transplant took place after a rigorous process, and both individuals have since recovered well.

Beard’s selfless act not only saved Azzarello’s life but also formed a lasting bond between the two women. Azzarello, now back to teaching art history, expresses gratitude for the second chance at life provided by her dedicated donor. Their story exemplifies the profound impact of organ donation and the hope it brings to those in need.
