A couple in Kamloops, British Columbia, utilized 3D printing technology to create a feeding stand for a foster kitten with a unique medical issue. The kitten, named Piglet, is five months old and was taken in by Angela and Jason Lyall when she was just two days old. Piglet had difficulty eating properly since birth, leading to stunted growth compared to her littermates.
Initially, Piglet’s health deteriorated, and she developed pneumonia, prompting discussions about euthanasia. However, further examination revealed that Piglet likely had megaesophagus, a condition where the esophagus does not function correctly, posing a risk of food regurgitation and inhalation into the lungs.
To address Piglet’s feeding challenges, Jason designed a custom vertical feeding stand using a free online template and 3D printing technology. The stand was crucial in ensuring Piglet received proper nutrition without the risk of aspiration, leading to significant improvements in her health and growth.
A video showcasing Piglet’s unique feeding setup went viral on social media, raising awareness about megaesophagus in cats and the importance of innovative solutions for pets with special needs. Angela emphasized the need for regular feeding and post-meal care to support Piglet’s well-being, highlighting the dedication and effort required from the entire family.
The adaptable nature of the vertical feeding stand allows for modifications as Piglet grows, ensuring continued support for her unique condition. Despite the initial uncertainties about Piglet’s survival, her remarkable progress and resilience have brought immense joy and gratitude to her caregivers.
